SIL vs ILO vs STA: What's the Difference and Which Support Is Right for You?

The NDIS is full of acronyms, and accommodation supports are some of the most confusing. If you've seen "SIL", "ILO", and "STA" in your plan or in provider websites and aren't sure what separates them, here's the plain-English version.
Supported Independent Living (SIL)
SIL funds the support you need with everyday tasks — like cooking, cleaning, and personal care — while living in a shared or individual home. It's ongoing, ordinary daily support, not the accommodation itself.
Investment in Living Options (ILO)
ILO is a more flexible, individualised living arrangement. Rather than a set shared-house model, ILO funding is built around your specific living goals — which might mean living with a housemate of your choosing, with family, or independently with tailored support.
Short Term Accommodation (STA)
STA covers short stays away from your regular home — often used for respite, a trial of a different living arrangement, or simply a short break with round-the-clock support included.
Which one is right for you?
That depends on your goals, your current living situation, and what's written into your plan. A good support coordinator can help you work out which pathway fits — and a good provider should be able to explain your options in plain language, not just acronyms.
